Examination Pattern
(A) Examiniation pattern

All the examinations of the Degree Courses and Post-graduate Degree courses are conducted in annual and semester pattern. Out of the 218 courses, only examinations of 68 courses are held an annually and examinations 95 courses are held semester wise and remaining 55 courses are research courses. Only examinations of traditional courses like B.A., B.Com. M.A., M.Com., are held annually. However, for Undergraduate & Postgraduate Courses, in Science, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy and Management courses a semester is applicable and same pattern is also followed. For most of the courses, 20% marks are reserved for continuous assessment and 80% marks for the University examination. But for some of the courses the continuous assessment marks are up to 40% where as 60% marks are for University examination. Novel examination system, for evaluation purpose the University has developed a model examination system characterized by confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy and speed. It silent features are as follows:

  • For each subject, three sets of questions papers covering the whole syllabus are set from which only one set is selected by the Dean / Chairman, Board of Examinations for conducting examinations. While others sets are retained in the safe custody.

  • The confidential center wise mechanism has been evolved to print, delivered store and used examinations related materials and collect the same for safe custody until made available for CAP.

  • In the new system of examination, we provide only 34 pages for a paper with no section and two 18 pages bar-coded answer books for a paper with two sections and no supplements. The different stages of a bar-coded answer book are presented in figure 04. At the examination center, Jr. Supervisor should confirm all the entries on the front page of the answer book and seat number of the candidates is to be masked by a pre gummed sticker with N.M.U. Logo. Instruction for a candidate and Jr. Supervisor are printed on the back side of the front page. After the examination, the answer books are collected at University Centre after verification from J.S.R., slips no. 3 of the bar coded answer book are detached and supplied to a computer section for scanning purposes. Answer books of different centre are mixed together and a bundle of 30 each are prepared. Then UID codes are pasted over the remaining two slips of each answer book and the bundles are kept ready for assessment. After assessment the second slip is detached and scan. From the two database relation of UID code, bar-code sheet number, mark list can be obtained for result processing. This method is helpful for more transparency in exam and reduces chances of malpractices at different levels.

  • With a view to curb malpractices by the students in the Examination University had taken different steps and unfair means are minimizing to the minimum possible level.

  • Central Assessments Programme are arranged at different centers this is made possible because of the system of bar-coded answer books.

Computerization of exam system

The work related to all courses of all faculties is computerized. The Computer Centre has developed their own programmes regarding pre-exam work post-exam work, CAP work, evaluating work and convocation work. All computing work is motorized by the computer section of the exam. The necessary trainings are given in the department by their officials. The employees are trained by the Centre and made them competent to operate the programs.

At present, the bar-code system is also operated through the computer department. The University has provided the required infrastructure like High Speed Printers, computers, scanners, internet facility and required software’s. Presently the University has singed M.O.U. with Exxon Company, Mumbai for software related to exam work. Which will helpful to increase the speed and accuracy of the exam system.

  • Prohibition of Malpractices: From the beginning this University is taking efforts to minimize the unfair means and malpractices in the examination and they are reduced to minimum possible level. With continuous support of colleagues in affiliated colleges our University could curb malpractices and unfair means of minimum possible level i.e. 2 to 3 %.<.p>

  • Facilities for students :

    • Students Helpline: The University has developed its own web site nmu.ac.in. on this web site University has created a link Student Helpline. On this link various information formats e.g. demand of various documents, various formats e.g. migration form, convocation specimen forms etc. are available.

    • e-Suvidha (MOU with MKCL) : To provide e-Suvidha to the students, the University had signed an MOU with MKCL. Under this scheme students can be informed the important information e.g. dates of exam, eligibility status, results etc. through SMS. Colleges can upload the eligibility forms and also upload exam forms and can download exam hall tickets, summary, eligibility lists, various circulars uploaded by the University etc.

    • Results on web site: The University is publishing the results on its web site since the year 2004. On web site students seat number, his/her subject wise marks, grand total and result etc. information can be seen. This system could avoid delay knowing the result and save the time of students.

    • Separate record section : Always students are demanding duplicate mark statements, name corrected mark statements, transcripts, authentication of various documents / certificates, migration certificates etc., for this purpose the examination sections has created a new cell named as Record Section, here student can get all the above mentioned facilities in one section.

    • Class Improvement Scheme: This University has extended this facility in almost all faculties. Under this scheme, the students can register their names for improvement of class i.e. pass class to second class or first class, second class to first class or for increasing percentage of marks. Such students have to opt 1/3 theory subjects for exam purpose.

  • Up gradation of computer & Internet facilities to all sections: All units of Examination Sections have computer and internet facilities. Almost all units are using e-mail facilities for correspondence with the colleges; this has helped for speedy correspondence without depending on other services. In future the paper-less working concept is to be brought in truth. Introducing more security marks on documents: For preventing misshapes in the documents the University has taken due care by introducing more security marks on its documents this could facilitate for while authentication of documents / certificates. Attachment of Eligibility and Migration Sections to Exam Dept: Previously exam section and eligibility section were separate and without confirming the eligibility results can not be declared. Due to lack of communication more results were require to be kept reserved for confirmation of eligibility. As the two sections are merged one person is appointed in each faculty to look after the eligibility and hence, above problem is resolved. Issuing degree at door: In the earlier system the students was required to apply for degree certificate within the stipulated period. Those who could not apply for the same, they were not entitled to get degree certificate and the students were to suffer. To avoid this, the University Authorities have decided to collect the forms for demand of degree certificate along with the examination forms of final years. The degree certificate of the students who are passed final year examinations will be prepared at once only for Convocation ceremony. This facility will be helpful to the students to get their certificates readily this system is introduced to avoid delay in obtaining a degree certificate.

(B)Best Practices:
  • Strengthening of student help line: University is planning to set a call centre for students, from which one can obtain the online information regarding examination. Single window system is to be introduced for issuing documents / certificates. For this purpose all old records are to be digitalized, so that the documents will be made available to the student within few hours.

  • On line examinations for General Knowledge and Environmental Science subjects. : In the near future the University is considering to conduct online examinations of the subjects General Knowledge and Environmental sciences.
