Sane Guruji has left an imprint on three generations through his life, his work and his thoughts in Maharashtra. Though born in Konkan, he made Khandesh his "Karmabhoomi". In view of his immense influence on young minds, a centre for the propagation of Sane Guruji's message to humanity was established by Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University on 24 Sept., 1997, named Sane Guruji Sanskar Kendra.

Name - Pandurang Sadashiv Sane

Birth - 24th Dec. 1899, Palghar, Tal-Dapoli, Dist- Ratnagiri

Education - M.A. (Marathi, English and Sanskrit)

Teaching Career

  • 17 June, 1924 -Teacher in Khandesh Education Society's High School (Presently Pratap High School) at Amalner.

  • 1925 to 1930 -Wrote biographies of freedom fighters and patriots.

  • 29 April 1930 - left school to become a participant in the Civil Disobedience Movement.

  • 1931 - Resumed his services as teacher.

Participation in the freedom struggle

  • Propagated the message of Satyagraha and the Civil Disobedience Movement. Imprisoned for eleven months at Dhule jail and Trichinapally. The concept of ''Antarbharti'' ignited his mind during this period.

  • 1931- Elected President of the Amalner Taluka Congress Committee.

  • 17 Jan 1931 to October 1933- Arrested after public meeting at Amalner. Imprisoned for two years at Dhule jail. Spent the term in the company of Vinoba Bhave, who recited the ''Geeta Pravachan'' which was penned by Sane Guruji.

  • August 1932 -Transferred to Nasik jail. In Nasik jail wrote the world famous ''Shamchi Aai'' ''Dhadpadnari Mule'' and other books. Spent twenty two months in jail.

  • 26 Jan 1934- Participation in Satyagraha movement. Arrested at Chalisgaon. Imprisoned in Dhule jail for four months. Stayed in Pune for three months after release, wrote the last episodes of ''Shamchi Aai'' (37to 45) during this period.

  • 1937- Commenced his work for the peasants and farmers of Khandesh.

  • 1942 -Went underground in Bombay during the Civil Disobedience Movement.

  • 18 January 1943- 15 January 1945- Imprisonment.

  • 24 Dec. 1946- President of the Children's Literary Meet at Pune.

  • 1 May 1947 to 10 May 1947- Satyagraha for ten days to throw open Pandharpur temple for Harijans.

  • 1 Feb to 21 Feb 1948- Satyagraha and fast for 21 days after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

  • 15 August 1948-- Launched ''Sadhana'' a weekly magazine.

  • May-June 1948 -Travelled through Karnataka state to spread the message of Antarbharti.

  • Sad demise- 11June 1950.

  • To acknowledge the significance of Sane Guruji's life and thought and to express indebtedness towards him.

  • To propagate the message of Sane Guruji to all sections of society through a study of his literary works.

  • To instill Sane Guruji's concept of "Antarbharati" in the society.

  • To establish a dialogue between the various regional languages of India and the arts of North Maharashtra region.

  • To disseminate Sane Guruji's message of national and emotional unity, cultural unity, democratic values, secularism service and other virtues among the young minds of the region.

  • To make available Sane Guruji's published and unpublished works and his views on Indian culture and the education system to the younger generation.

  • To create bridges between the students at the primary and secondary level and the students of the university.

  • To organise lecture series, seminars, workshops, conferences to fulfil the above objectives.

अपील

The university has undertaken the task of collecting the memoirs of Sane Guruji and setting up a special centre cum exhibition at Pratap Philosophy Centre where Sane Guruji spent some years of his life. The centre would comprise of books, literature, articles, artefacts, photographs, manuscripts which would be readily available for any scholar, researcher, student or person for study. We appeal to you to help us trace any important person, document or clue which would shed more light on the life and work of Sane Guruji. These efforts will enhance the hisforic and cultural value of the Centre, to crystallise our efforts to commemorate the memory of Sane Guruji's contribution to the political, social, cultural and historical ethos of the region.
