About Department

This department runs B. Tech. course in Paints Technology and M.Tech course in Polymer Technology covering areas such as polymer chemistry and technology; pigments, solvents & additives; formulation, manufacture and application of solvent borne, high solid, water borne, powder, electro deposition and radiation curing coatings. Quality Dispersion Machineries (Bead Mill, Ball Mill, Pug Mixer, Sigma Mixer, High Speed Disperser, Triple Roll Mill, Attritor) have been installed to undertake pilot scale manufacture of paints and printing inks. Slurry Reactor with distillation and crystallisation accessories is available for carrying polymer synthesis under diverse conditions. The characterization facilities include instruments for determination of mass tone, oil absorption, reduced tone, dry (ultrasonic, magnetic flux, induction) and wet film thickness, conical and cylindrical Mandrel flexibility, Erichson cupping, Mar Resistance, Impact Resistance, Cross cut adhesion, Scratch and pencil hardness, Specular gloss & diffuse reflectance, hiding power, humidity resistance, salt spray corrosion resistance, pinhole defects etc. Application facility covers compressed air spray gun, wire / cubical applicator. Powder coating facility includes Twin Screw Extruder, Pulverizer and Electrostatic Dludised Bed Applicator.

THRUST AREAS:

Telechelic oligomers, depolymerisation of powder coatings, latex paints, high solid coatings, ecofriendly anti fouling paints, nanospacers, blocked isocyanates, self cleaning/ hygenic coating, UV Curable Powder Coating etc.

The department has 06 faculty members with experience in research and industry.

Program Outcomes (PO)

Engineering Graduates will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge:Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis:Identity, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions:Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems:Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage:Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society:Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

The B. Tech. Paints Technology Program at the University Institute of Chemical Technology of North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon is conducted with the following Educational Objectives:

  1. Fulfillment of the growing demands of Entrepreneurs, Technocrats and Scientists of best standards matching to the Competency Requirements of Industries and Academic/ Research Institutions.
  2. Training of students to provide the strong domain of Scientific and General Engineering Foundation besides attitude building for problem solving, teamwork, and professional skills.
  3. To apply and integrate the acquaintance of the scientific and technological principles underlying the major elements of Paint Technology and Chemical Engineering: Polymer Chemistry and Technology; Pigments, Solvents and Additives; Formulation, Manufacture, Quality Assurance and Application of solvent borne, high solid, water borne, powder, electrodeposition and radiation curing coatings; reaction engineering and thermodynamics; unit operations; process control and plant design
  4. To provide learning opportunity in the broad spectrum of multidisciplinary fields such as nanotechnology, special effect pigments and paints, polymer reaction engineering, sophisticated instrumentation, corrosion control, printing inks, piping and pump calculations, process automations etc.
  5. To make responsible Paint Technologist Graduates who can contribute to the Society in a productive manner while taking due care of Ecosystem.
